“Out Of Gas”
by S Elaine Stevens
Have you ever run out of gas? I almost did, one night several years ago, while driving on a dark, and unknown road. It was a night when my faith was tested more than ever.
Driving for hours is not my idea of a great way to pass the time. However, my job, back in 1997, as a sales rep, often took me to cities far from home. Those times were frequent, almost an everyday venture. During those trips out of town, the days seemed extra long and strenuous. It was no different at the time of this adventure that I want to share.
The long summer evening was upon me. I was exhausted and in a hurry for this Friday to end. You see, I was driving, after a particularly tiring day, on my way to my Aunt Mary’s for a family reunion. Looking at the directions I was given, it seemed to me as if her house was out in the middle of nowhere!
“Don’t forget to stop and get gas!” I reminded myself while driving through several towns on my way to the family reunion at Lake Ballinger near San Angelo. Yet, each time I reminded myself, what did I do? I just kept on driving until eventually, the darn light went off, alerting me to an almost empty gas tank. By this time, sunset was upon me and I was in the middle of nowhere, on a dirt road.
